Remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel Approach Las Vegas Valley
The National Weather Service has forecast the arrival of the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel in Southern Nevada today, bringing a significant increase in rainfall for the Las Vegas Valley.
Rising Rainfall Chances and Showers Expected
According to Brayden Murdock, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, there is currently a 25 percent chance of rain this afternoon. Rainfall chances will climb as the day goes on, with a “wave of rain” likely after 6 p.m. in the valley.
Nighttime Rainfall Increase
After 10 p.m., there is a 60 percent chance of rain, and those odds continue to rise overnight. By Sunday morning, the probability of rain will hit 90 percent, especially during the morning hours. Murdock noted that rain chances will begin to subside after 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Rainfall Totals and Flood Concerns
Rain totals could exceed one inch in many parts of the Las Vegas Valley, particularly in higher elevations, where rainfall may be even greater. Flooding is a concern for some roadways and intersections, as seen in previous storms such as those that impacted Pahrump in August 2023.
Continuing Showers and Extended Forecast
The showers won’t end with the weekend. Monday’s weather forecast suggests a 50 percent chance of continued rain, and a 30 percent chance lingers into Tuesday. This period of unsettled weather is the result of the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel interacting with a cold front moving in from the Pacific Northwest.
Significant Temperature Drop
Along with the showers and storms, Las Vegas can expect a noticeable temperature drop. By Tuesday, highs are forecast to reach only 71 degrees, more than 10 degrees below normal for this time of year. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the 50s, and the cooler temperatures are likely to remain through the week.
Outlook for the Las Vegas Valley
Residents and visitors in the Las Vegas Valley should prepare for frequent showers, possible thunderstorms, and cooler weather conditions over the next several days. The combination of the tropical system’s remnants and the Pacific Northwest cold front is expected to maintain unsettled weather into next week.
Preparing for Las Vegas Rain
Drivers are advised to use caution during periods of heavy rain and potential highway flooding. The National Weather Service continues to monitor rainfall chances and rain totals as the weather system moves through the region, and updates to the rainfall forecast will be provided as conditions develop.
