Las Vegas Moves Up in Global Cities Index
Las Vegas has achieved a notable rise in its global standing, ranking as the 89th top city worldwide according to the 2026 Global Cities Index by Oxford Economics. The annual report assesses the world’s 1,000 largest cities, evaluating each in five key categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.
Oxford Economics Highlights Economic and Environmental Improvement
Barbara Denham, a lead economist at Oxford Economics, explained the factors behind Las Vegas’s improved ranking. She stated, “Las Vegas’s rankings improved from 96 to 89 overall. This was due to its improved economic score slash ranking and environment ranking.” Denham elaborated that a stronger GDP growth rate was the main reason for the city’s economic advancement, while environmental improvement was attributed to better performance across most measures, notably the absence of major temperature or rainfall anomalies.
Key Results From the Global Cities Index
The 2026 edition of the Global Cities Index reflects worldwide urban dynamics by measuring economic growth, quality of governance, human capital resources, and environmental resilience. New York tops this year’s list, followed by London, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, and Dublin. Las Vegas placed just behind Hong Kong and Lyon, France, and ranked ahead of Manchester, England, and Reykjavik, Iceland. The index’s lowest scoring cities include Weinan (China), Sultanpur (India), and Sokoto (Nigeria).
Las Vegas in the North American Context
Within North America, which includes Canada, the United States, and Mexico, Las Vegas holds the 31st spot according to Oxford Economics. This North America city ranking provides additional perspective on where Las Vegas stands regionally in areas such as economic growth, environment, and city governance.
Comparisons With Other City Rankings
Las Vegas’s enhanced global ranking follows other recognitions for its urban development. Another recent study by Resonance focusing on U.S. cities positioned Las Vegas as the seventh best city in the country. In this assessment, Las Vegas outperformed larger metropolitan areas, including Dallas (eighth), Houston (ninth), and Boston (tenth). These findings reflect a broader trend of Las Vegas gaining prominence in both us city rankings and international indices.
Contributing Factors and Future Outlook
The improvements identified in the 2026 Global Cities Index signal continued economic growth for Las Vegas, alongside enhanced environmental performance. As the city advances in areas ranging from GDP growth rate to urban resilience, Las Vegas’s position in global and North American rankings highlights the effects of targeted efforts in city quality of life and governance.
