Trump Considers Pardon for Music Icon Sean Combs
Donald Trump is again at the center of attention after recent comments about Sean “Diddy” Combs. The former president was on Newsmax’s Finnerty on Friday, Aug. 1. In the interview, Trump was asked if he would issue a pardon for the hip-hop mogul if the choice was up to him. The question stems from a conviction last month after a nearly eight-week-long trial.
The founder of Bad Boy Records was convicted on one federal charge: transportation with intent to engage in prostitution. Combs was also acquitted on more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. The trial has been ongoing for months with plenty of witnesses and testimony in between. It has included testimony about a past relationship between Combs and singer Cassie Ventura. She alleged abuse and trafficking during their time together. Combs has maintained his innocence throughout the process.
“Well, he was sort of, I guess, half-innocent,” Trump said when asked if he’d consider pardoning Combs. He also added some mixed vagueness and familiarity. “He’s still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn’t as good a victory.”
Trump also brought up the past relationship between him and the music mogul, with some insinuation that they were friends. “We were very friendly. I got along with him great,” he said. But he added they don’t speak as much now. “He used to like me a lot. I think when I ran for politics, that relationship busted up. … I would certainly look at the facts. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Trump in the Past
This, of course, isn’t the first time Trump has been asked about pardoning Diddy. Back in May, during a press briefing in the Oval Office, Trump was asked the same question about Combs from Fox News reporter Peter Doocy. At the time, Trump said that he’s “looked at that, but I will, again, look at the facts.”
The former president hasn’t pardoned Combs yet, and it’s unclear whether he will. His comments have now brought more attention to the case and possible clemency. Back in May, Trump also set clear expectations that he wouldn’t allow personal feelings to come into his decision.
“I haven’t spoken to him in years,” Trump told Doocy at the time. “But I do know him well. If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don’t like me, it wouldn’t have any impact on me.”
Diddy’s Trial
For his part, Combs’ legal journey has had many ups and downs. Charges are related to a federal investigation and indictment last year. The conviction last month saw Combs found guilty on one charge but cleared of more serious charges, as mentioned. The conviction is for transportation with intent to engage in prostitution. Combs now faces a maximum of 20 years in prison. He will be sentenced on Oct. 3.
The trial, investigation, and now possible presidential pardon or clemency are garnering much attention. They have stoked celebrity justice issues, the power of a president, and how personal relationships could (or could not) influence decisions.
A clip of Trump’s full comments on Finnerty has been shared on X (formerly Twitter). Reactions have come from across political lines and the hip-hop world, as well as legal analysts and others. The former president hasn’t taken any official action yet on Combs’ situation. But the speculation and possibility of action continue to make headlines and debate.
The Combs case moves to the next phase in October, with sentencing. Until then, the public will likely continue to hear and speculate about the potential pardon.
