Strange New Worlds Season 3 Trailer: A Trekker’s Feast

Fans have had to wait a long time for an official trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, with the only previous glimpse at the show’s next chapter being a teaser trailer released back in April. That first glimpse at the next season had largely left fans in the dark, with the only notable information being that the third season would be launching on July 17, 2025, a full year before its actual debut. Paramount+ has since released the full trailer ahead of next summer’s debut, a major upgrade to the sparse April video.

Season 2 ended on a series-wide cliffhanger, with the Enterprise under a full-scale attack from the Gorn, who were busy invading a Federation colony world in the process. Crew members and several Federation colonists were taken hostage by the Gorn in the confusion, and Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) was left with a difficult choice: to obey orders from Starfleet to fall back and leave the hostages behind, or defy orders and attempt a rescue mission. Predictably, Pike refused to turn away, leading to the battle we now pick up from at the start of the new trailer.

Fans were able to get a brief glimpse at Season 3 back in October last year, when footage was first shown at New York City Comic-Con. These brief scenes included on the Enterprise as it took part in another signature space battle, this time against the rapidly approaching Gorn. In true Strange New Worlds fashion, the preview trailer started with a bang as tension between the Enterprise crew and Pike is brought to a head by the Federation survivors, especially First Officer Spock (Ethan Peck). The trailer is more of a direct continuation of the events and story beats set up in Season 2 and last year’s preview footage.

The new trailer again shows the Enterprise once again entering a Gorn stronghold as the episode this time picks up shortly after the last, but that will not be the only threat Pike and his crew face this season. In fact, while the Gorn conflict will reach a conclusion at some point, they will also be met by a new enemy, one that will test their commitment, determination, and morale. Fans will also be in for something of a fresh direction as far as the general tone of the season is concerned. Paramount+ has confirmed that while the third season will continue to deliver the expected, non-comic book sci-fi space opera fare of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, it will also offer a fresh balance of thematic and tonal variation to the typical Trek formula, with this season spanning genre-defying episodes of faith, honor, romance, comedy, and mystery.

Returning members of the show’s main and recurring cast members will be reprising their roles for Season 3, which once again will be under the command of Pike. There are also some notable returning characters making a reappearance on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3, none more so than Dr. Roger Korby, played by Cillian O’Sullivan. Korby was first portrayed by Michael Strong in an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. A celebrated archaeologist specializing in medical archaeology, Korby will first make his live-action appearance since 1967 in the upcoming season as the long-missing fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). His sudden return to the ship and the lives of both Chapel and Pike will no doubt put a personal and professional strain on their relationship, especially now that Chapel has found a romantic connection with Spock.

Season 3 will also feature appearances by guest stars Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both of whom will bring their signature comedic flair to the show. In fact, this variety of tones and genres was teased in the April trailer, which revealed glimpses of an action-heavy story, as well as a lighter, more comedic side arc. The official trailer seems to pick up on this tonal variety, with the new trailer including the Enterprise crew bonding together in camaraderie, as well as engaging in more serious yet still intimate romantic subplots, not to mention one crew member being poisoned by an experimental reaction gone wrong.

James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) is also seen in the captain’s chair, albeit only briefly and it is not yet clear what the circumstances are for this to have happened. It is clear that Kirk will not be acting without cause, especially given Pike’s advice to him after he sits: “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with”. Kirk’s time in the seat is also a time for growth, which is expected to have an impact on his character in both this season and, presumably, in future episodes.

Fans are also treated to an unexpected comedic gag at the end of the preview, which features Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan in a conversation about “high-fives”. First, Spock demonstrates a successful high five, before attempting a similar motion on the Vulcan only to pull the classic “too slow” maneuver after being asked to do it “down low”. The Vulcan, confused, asks Spock “Why would you do that?” Spock replies simply and matter-of-factly: “Because you are too slow”. It may be a brief moment, but one that perfectly sums up the series’ balance of high-stakes sci-fi adventure and dry wit.

Season 3 Premiere Date and Schedule
