Wednesday’s Story Isn’t Over: Season 3 and Spin-Off Planned
Netflix has shared the first look at Billie Piper as the new character for the second season of Wednesday. The 42-year-old actress will play the enigmatic Isadora Capri, who is described as “the brilliant head of music at Nevermore Academy.”
Fans will no doubt be able to spot the connection between Billie Piper’s character and Wednesday Addams’ (Jenna Ortega) musical talents. Isadora Capri was a child prodigy and had an affinity for the exceptionally gifted teen.” The character will also have a relationship with werewolf student Enid Sinclair, played by Emma Myers.
Billie Piper previously worked with Wednesday’s showrunner, Jeremy Slater, on the 2016 gothic horror Penny Dreadful, playing Brona Croft/The Bride of Frankenstein. The new look was revealed in a tweet from Netflix alongside big announcements on the future of the record-breaking series. The Addams Family prequel first appeared on Netflix in November 2022, and it immediately proved to be a worldwide success story. Wednesday received 252 million viewers around the world and became the largest English-language series in Netflix history. Due to this outstanding success, in January 2023, it was announced that it had been renewed for a second season. Now the streaming service has revealed that the second installment will be released in August this year.
Wednesday reimagines the Addams Family for a new generation and centers on Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega, 22. The sullen teen character must attend Nevermore Academy for supernatural misfits while also solving the mystery of who murdered her mother, the Grand High Witch of Nevermore. In addition to some typical horror and gore, Wednesday also takes on the tone of a gothic coming-of-age series. She rebels against her family and defies social expectations as a moody and gothic teen with a penchant for sarcasm. The series has not only received recognition in the form of an Emmy nomination but also has many die-hard fans.
Spin-Off in the Works and Season Three is Official
Billie Piper is not the only major cast announcement, and Netflix has confirmed that Wednesday has been renewed for a third season. As well as this, the Hollywood Reporter has learned that a spin-off is also in the works. “It’s something we’re noodling; there are other characters we can look at,” one of the show’s co-creators, Alfred Gough, said.
Wednesday had already seen a huge response on social media when co-star Catherine Zeta-Jones, 53, who plays Morticia Addams, shared the official renewal herself. “When Wednesday comes, a better day. Wednesday season three. It’s official … we shall return,” she posted on Instagram, adding a still from the show. Many fans replied, with messages like “And for many more seasons,” “Gonna love it again just like the first season,” and “I can’t wait to see the second season, I’m waiting for it with great curiosity … and the third is already official, fantastic news!”
Fans of the show also expressed their hopes that production on the new season could begin soon, as they don’t want to have to wait so long for a second time. Wednesday season 2 is now more than two years away from its initial debut, despite having been confirmed in January 2023, and many fans are calling for shorter waiting periods in the future. “I’ll be gripping the sheets in agony waiting, but please… don’t let us wait three years again,” said one viewer.
Tim Burton, 66, will return as an executive producer and occasional director. Burton also recently reunited with Ortega on Beetlejuice, which is the upcoming sequel to his 1988 cult film.
Billie Piper is only one of many big names that the show will welcome for its new season. Lady Gaga, Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Thandie Newton are all set to join the cast. Regular cast members returning for season two include Gwendoline Christie as headteacher Larissa Weems and Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Wednesday’s father.
Ortega is no longer only in front of the camera; the young actress is set to become a producer for the show. The actress said some controversial things in a podcast interview that had many fans raising their eyebrows. In the interview, Ortega stated that she occasionally “changed lines” and had to “put her foot down” when there were inconsistencies with her character. Director Tim Burton had publicly stood up for Ortega and claimed that she had been misinterpreted. The show’s other co-creator, Alfred Gough, also explained that Ortega becoming a producer made perfect sense. “She is one of those rare people who is that into it, and she has very clear, strong ideas, and she’s not afraid to be wrong about something,” he said.
Joanna Lumley, who is one of the new members of the cast, also stated that working on the show is very exciting. “There’s always something thrilling about working for Tim Burton. His whole mind takes him to a different world, and the world that they’ve created here for Wednesday and Nevermore and the family is just intoxicating,” she said.
With the Billie Piper addition to the cast, the news of the third season’s release, and a potential spin-off in the works, there is no end in sight for the Wednesday universe. Fans are now only counting the days until August.
