Education Secretary Linda McMahon Tours College of Southern Nevada
On Wednesday, U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon visited the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) in North Las Vegas to spotlight its workforce programs and discuss federal efforts to expand opportunities for students. Accompanied by Republican Governor Joe Lombardo, McMahon explored several classrooms at CSN, engaging with students and faculty.
Emphasis on Workforce Readiness and Partnership Models
During her visit, McMahon praised CSN’s collaboration with local high schools and even middle schools, emphasizing the development of dual credentials to better prepare students for in-demand careers. "It’s really fantastic now to be able to see community colleges that are working so closely with high schools, even middle schools, creating these dual credentials," McMahon remarked, highlighting the value of aligning secondary and postsecondary education pathways.
Federal Pell Grant Changes and Workforce Pell
McMahon also discussed recent changes to the Federal Pell Grant, a need-based subsidy for undergraduate students. A new provision termed "Workforce Pell" allows a portion of grant funding to support accelerated programs, some as short as eight weeks or fifteen weeks, intended to fast-track students' entry into the workforce. She noted, "So, the total dollars that have now been passed or allocated for Pell Grant, a portion of those can be used for Workforce Pell, which means that there are programs for eight weeks and 15 weeks to get workers into the workforce faster."
Keynote on State Innovation and Education Policy
In a keynote address at CSN, McMahon discussed the Trump Administration’s focus on returning educational decision-making power to the states. She reiterated the importance of "education innovation" and adapting programs to better fit the unique needs of local communities and students. "The best education is that that’s closest to the student," McMahon stated. "Not one size fits all, and it cannot be dictated from Washington. It is state innovation that provides the best success."
CSN Awarded $3 Million for NEXUS Workforce Initiative
The visit highlighted a recent $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education for CSN’s NEXUS Workforce Initiative. According to an October 5 press release, NEXUS is designed to modernize curriculum, create more flexible credential pathways, and better connect student skills with employer needs. The initiative will launch at least twelve new AI-specific courses and develop nine pathways bridging noncredit training with college workforce credit, strengthening workforce readiness and enhancing college workforce offerings.
Ongoing Multi-State Tour and Next Destinations
Following her stop in Las Vegas, McMahon’s multi-state tour continued in Salt Lake City on Tuesday and is scheduled for Phoenix as her next destination. Her visits underscore a continuing federal focus on college workforce development, college funding innovation, and supporting credential pathways in community colleges across the country.
