Nine teens have been arrested in the June 24 shooting death of 16-year-old Trey Dean Wright of Johnsonville, South Carolina, after an argument “over a girl.” The shooting was allegedly filmed on video by one of the suspects, police said.
Florence County deputies found Wright dead on June 24 along First Neck Road. He had been shot several times. The rural road where Wright was found is about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach. On June 25, police arrested 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper of Conway, the shooter who, deputies say, shot Wright multiple times following an argument.
Authorities said Raper was not acting alone, and in the weeks after Wright’s killing, Florence County deputies announced new arrests. Investigators said several other teens helped lure Wright to the spot where Raper was waiting, knowing Raper was armed and had made threats against the victim.
Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital she was upset over the amount of time and money being spent in court. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”
Among those arrested were Wright’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach. Prosecutors said Kistenmacher was instrumental in luring the victim to the scene, bringing Raper to the spot even though she knew he was armed and a violent confrontation was likely.
Kistenmacher has been charged with being an accessory before the fact to murder.
Law Enforcement: Teens Complicit in Luring Victim to Shooting
Florence County Sheriff’s Office Major Michael Nunn said multiple suspects were involved in bringing about the encounter. “They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” Nunn said in an interview with WBTW-TV. “They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”
South Carolina state law allows prosecutors to charge teens as adults in serious crimes like murder, and authorities said five of the suspects will be prosecuted as adults. “The hand of one being the hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” Nunn said.
Three more teens from the Myrtle Beach area were also charged with murder in addition to Raper. Investigators identified the other suspects as 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns. Prosecutors said they also played key roles in the plot and face direct murder charges as a result.
Sheriff T.J. Joye told local media that the two teenagers had been feuding over a girl. “They had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” he said. “The sad thing is, you got a 16-year-old that lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
Raper was initially charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. He was ordered held without bond. Kendall, who was also charged with murder, has also been held without bond. Belviso and Kearns each posted a $20,000 surety bond last week, and were released pending trial.
Florence County Sheriff’s Office investigators have declined to provide further information, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation, and prosecutors have declined to comment on details of the case. But for Wright’s mother, the pain remains fresh.
She has mourned the loss of her son publicly, while also venting her frustration with the process. She is not only struggling with losing her son, she said, but also having to face the reality of his girlfriend and other friends being part of the group of suspects who prosecutors say took part in the plot against him. The shooting has also raised questions about the role of teenage conflicts, peer pressure, and easy access to guns in the community as factors that contributed to the violent outcome.
A fight between two people ended in tragedy and the arrest of nine others. Two families have been torn apart, and a small community in South Carolina is now asking how an argument over a girl got so out of hand.
