Las Vegas Man Sentenced in East Valley Fatal Shooting
A Las Vegas man who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his father during a dispute in June at an east Las Vegas Valley apartment complex has been sentenced to prison. The sentencing took place on Wednesday, following the earlier guilty plea for voluntary manslaughter with use of a deadly weapon.
Details of the Apartment Shooting
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred on June 9, 2026, at an apartment complex in the 2600 block of South Bruce Street near the Canyon Club Apartments. Bishop Deshotel, then 22, shot and killed his father, 49-year-old Peter Deshotel. The dispute began after Peter Deshotel, who had recently moved into the residence, was awakened by an argument involving Bishop Deshotel. When Peter intervened, a physical altercation developed between father and son.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Shooting
As described in the police arrest report, Peter Deshotel grabbed a pair of brass knuckles, which Bishop Deshotel described to police as having spikes. In response, Bishop retreated to his room and grabbed a gun from under his pillow. Peter followed his son and stood in the doorway. Bishop attempted to leave the room, but Peter tried to grab the gun. A struggle ensued, and during the fight, Peter Deshotel was shot twice.
Investigation by Metropolitan Police
The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the scene and investigated the homicide. Peter Deshotel was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The investigation concluded that the fatal shooting occurred as a result of the altercation during the father son dispute at the east Las Vegas apartment.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
District Judge Michelle Leavitt presided over the sentencing. Bishop Deshotel pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with use of a deadly weapon on August 26, 2026. The court imposed a prison term of two to five years. In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Leavitt also imposed a suspended period of probation for up to three years, according to court records.
Case Noted Among Recent Las Vegas Court Sentencings
This apartment shooting case is one among several high-profile court sentencing proceedings in Las Vegas this year. The circumstances involving the use of a deadly weapon and the complexities of a family dispute underscore ongoing concerns addressed by local law enforcement, such as the Metropolitan Police, regarding violence within residential communities. There was no mention in the case details of the involvement of a juvenile offender.
