Snoop Dogg has come under fire from progressives online after attacking LGBTQ+ inclusion in children’s movies. Rapping legend Snoop Dogg spoke on Sarah Fontenot’s It’s Giving podcast last week, in which he criticized Pixar’s 2022 Lightyear for featuring a same-sex couple.

The rapper and actor described bringing his grandson to the film and having to explain the presence of a same-sex couple, to which he was at a loss for words. The dialogue in question centered around a scene that was eventually cut from the film, which saw two women in a relationship share a brief kiss.

The Pixar spinoff from the Toy Story franchise originally included the scene as part of the main film, only to remove it in the face of conservative criticism, before reinstating it again amid internal and public backlash.

Snoop Dogg Confused by Pixar’s Same-Sex Kiss

After screening the movie with his grandson, the rapper claims he was pulled up by the child for a brief discussion about the two women having a child together. “Why, my grandson in the middle of the movie, like, ‘Papa Snoop, how does she have a baby with a woman? She is a woman,” Snoop Dogg recalled. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”

Snoop Dogg confessed that he did not know how to answer his grandson’s question, merely telling him to keep watching the film. “They just said she had a baby. They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he added. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”

To the rapper, the incident stuck out to him the most because children have a habit of asking questions when they see things they do not understand, and grandparents have to improvise when it comes to topics that they are not prepared to discuss. “It threw me for a loop,” he stated. “These are kids that we have to show that at this age, like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”

Australia Pressures Snoop Dogg After Attack on LGBTQ+ Moment

The comments have since caused an uproar online with progressives, largely because Snoop Dogg is slated to perform at the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final later this year. PinkNews Australia reported that Gillon McLachlan, the chief executive of the AFL, has backed the decision to keep Snoop on the lineup.

Snoop Dogg, who had addressed the LGBTQ+ moment in the film on the It’s Giving podcast, had stated to the podcast hosts that “being gay and having a baby doesn’t go together.”

The AFL has made strides in recent years to promote inclusion and diversity at the senior professional level, and has not offered any sign that Snoop Dogg’s appearance at the AFL Grand Final will be canceled. Snoop Dogg is one of several artists who will perform at the game, which has so far made no indication of possible changes.

Lightyear Has a Long History of Backlash Against LGBTQ+ moments

Lightyear was embroiled in controversy even before it was released in 2022, largely because of the same-sex scene. The Disney-owned studio has faced repeated conservative backlash for placing a same-sex kiss into a children’s film, and critics were quick to blame the inclusion for the underwhelming performance at the box office.

The film, which grossed just over $226 million globally, was a massive disappointment for Pixar, especially considering that Lightyear was part of the Toy Story franchise, which has produced some of the highest-grossing films in the studio’s history.

Chris Evans, who voiced the titular Buzz Lightyear character in the film, had previously defended the inclusion of a same-sex scene during an interview with Reuters Television in June 2022. “The real truth is those people are idiots,” Evans had said. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.”

The 2022 film revolved around “real” Buzz Lightyear, the space-faring science-fiction hero who inspired the toy brand and led to Buzz Lightyear becoming a mainstay of the Toy Story series.
